California employers are now required to provide training to their employees on workplace violence. This is part of California Senate bill 553. Educating your workers on workplace violence prevention will not only help you comply with the law but also potentially help your employees from becoming injured at your workplace. This is the California version, built around Senate Bill 553 and Labor Code section 6401.9, which has required most California employers to keep a written workplace violence prevention plan and train employees on it since July 1, 2024, with refresher training every year. Employers outside California, or anyone who wants the general OSHA-framework program, should use our workplace violence prevention training video kit instead.

Yes. Labor Code section 6401.9, added by Senate Bill 553, has required most California employers to establish a written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan and train employees on it since July 1, 2024. Cal/OSHA enforces it. This kit is the employee training piece; the California manager workplace violence training kit covers the supervisors who run the plan.
When the plan is first established, then every year, and again whenever a new or previously unrecognized workplace violence hazard is identified or the plan changes. New employees are trained when they start. The kit’s sign-in sheet and reusable certificate document each session.
Among other items: the names of the people responsible for the plan, how employees participate, procedures for reporting incidents and concerns without retaliation, how the employer responds to and investigates incidents, how hazards are identified and corrected, emergency response procedures, a violence incident log, the training itself, and how the plan is reviewed at least annually. The kit includes a sample fill-in-the-blank plan you can adapt.
Workplaces covered by Cal/OSHA’s healthcare workplace violence standard (Title 8 section 3342), facilities operated by the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, law enforcement agencies, employees teleworking from a location the employer does not control, and workplaces with fewer than ten employees present at any given time that are not accessible to the public.
