OSHA Standard: 1926.21(b)(2)

Our OSHA-compliant skid steer certification training video and kit cover all essential skid steer safety topics and provide resources like a presenter’s guide and sign-in sheet for in-house trainers. Successful completion of this operator training course and quiz ensures employees understand safety standards.

We also offer an online training option that makes it easy for you to assign and track safety training and allows trainees to work at their own pace. All our programs come in both English and Spanish and can be completed in as little as one hour.

OSHA classifies skid steers as earthmoving equipment, and its general safety standard 1926.21(b)(2) requires that employers instruct employees on safe operation. Standard 1926.20(b)(4) echoes this sentiment, noting that only qualified employees should operate equipment.

Is Skid Steer Training the Same as Powered Industrial Truck Training?

No, skid steer training is not the same as powered industrial truck training. OSHA standard 1910.178(a)(1) states that powered industrial truck safety requirements do not apply to vehicles intended for earth moving, such as skid steers.

However, vertical mast skid steers designed to meet the ANSI B56.6 standard are classified as rough terrain forklifts and require powered industrial truck training. This distinction is crucial because it affects the type of training and certification operators need to comply with OSHA standards.

How to Document Skid Steer Training?

Once your employees have successfully completed the skid steer training, you can print the certificate of completion, which comes in our training kit. Keep this one for your records. You can also issue skid steer operators wallet cards to quickly verify who is certified in the field.

If you choose to use our online management system, you can easily track training progress, including who has passed the quizzes and completed the course.

Does OSHA Have Additional Skid Steer Requirements?

OSHA standard 1926.602 outlines general rules for earthmoving handling equipment, which includes skid steer loaders. It details the need for seat belts, brake systems, rollover protection structures, and other safety features.
