Safety Awareness for New Employees – [Video Training Kit]

Safety awareness training for new employees is the general program that teaches a new hire to see the everyday hazards of a workplace, such as slippery floors, cluttered aisles, ladders, lifting, tools, chemicals and fire, and what to do about them before job-specific training begins. This 34-minute video kit gives every new employee the same foundation in the first week, in English or Spanish, and the quiz and certificate let you document that they received it.

Who Needs Safety Awareness Training

• Every new hire in a general industry workplace, in the first week on the job
• Employees transferring into a new facility, department or shift

Repeat it when an employee has a near miss, when a housekeeping or PPE lapse is observed, and when a new hazard, chemical or process is introduced. OSHA sets no interval for general awareness training; the topic standards below set their own retraining triggers.

What OSHA Requires

There is no single OSHA standard called safety awareness training. What the standards require is training on each hazard an employee is exposed to, and this program introduces several of them: hazard communication (29 CFR 1910.1200(h)), personal protective equipment (1910.132(f)), portable fire extinguishers (1910.157(g)), emergency action plans (1910.38(e)) and walking-working surfaces including ladders (1910.30). This video supports those requirements by giving new employees the awareness each one assumes; your job-specific training and your records complete them.
