Falls are the leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the construction industry. In 2022, 38.4% of construction fatalities resulted from falls, slips, and trips, with an estimated 189 fall-related deaths in 2024.

Our fall protection certification kit is designed to address this critical safety challenge head-on. Complying with OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.503 (construction) and 1910.30 (general industry), which mandate training for employees potentially exposed to fall hazards, our comprehensive program provides everything you need to protect your workforce and meet regulatory requirements.

Each year, more than 20% of disabling injuries occur when an employee sustains a fall while working above ground – thousands more are fatalities. In fact, falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry. This Fall Protection Training Video is an important part of your Company’s safety training program. This training will help your facility comply with OSHA regulations and protect employees from sustaining on-the-job injuries.

  • Fall prevention techniques to avoid common fall hazards on the job

Who Can Provide Fall Protection Training?

OSHA fall protection standards 1926.503(a)(2) and 1910.30(a)(2) stipulate that employees must be trained by a competent or qualified employee. Essentially, this means that the trainer must have the knowledge to identify hazards and perform tasks safely and the ability to communicate safe habits to trainees.

A trainer leading construction fall protection training must be qualified in the following:

  • The nature of fall hazards in the work area
  • Procedures for safely using fall protection systems
  • The use of fall protection systems such as guardrails, personal fall arrest systems, and safety nets
  • The role of each employee when using safety monitoring systems
  • Limitations of mechanical equipment during roofing work
  • Procedures for handling and storing equipment and materials when erecting overhead protection
  • The role of employees in fall protection plans

How Should Training Be Documented?

OSHA 1926.503(b) requires employees to keep a written record of fall protection training. The fall protection certification should include the name of the trained employee, dates of training, and signature of the trainer or employer.

While standards for walking-working surfaces don’t detail a training documentation requirement, it’s best practice to keep records in case you’re ever audited. Our printable certificate of completion can be used for recordkeeping.

Is Fall Protection Retraining Required?

Refresher training is required if employees show that they don’t have the understanding or skills to protect themselves from falls. Additional training is also required if there are changes to the work environment or type of fall protection system used.

What is the minimum height to wear a safety harness?

OSHA states that the minimum height is 6 feet for construction and 4 feet for general industries. If you have employees working above these heights, they need to wear safety harnesses.

What is the standard fall protection weight limit for fall arrest systems?

ANSI rates most standard harnesses for a maximum of 310 pounds.

Can you tie off to rebar for fall protection?

No. Although rebar looks sturdy, it is not meant to bear the weight of a falling worker. OSHA regulations require that the anchorage point sustain a minimum load of 5000 pounds. This is per OSHA 29 CFR § 1926.502(d)(15)

What is the free fall limit for fall protection?

OSHA 1910.140(d)(2)(ii) states that personal fall arrest systems cannot free fall for more than 6 feet. However, if the employer can show that the manufacturer of the PFAS designed and tested the system to fall greater than 6 feet and that a maximum arresting force of 1800 pounds is not exceeded, it can then be used.
