This Sodium and Potassium Hydroxide safety video describes where these caustics are found and in what common forms. The program explains the forms that caustics may take and teaches safe storage and handling procedures. Typical containers used for storage and transportation are described, and proper personal protective equipment and respiratory protection, as well as safety precautions, such as showers, warning signs, safe loading, and safe unloading techniques, are discussed. This safety training video covers flammability and reactive properties and discusses symptoms of exposure and medical treatment for exposed victims. It also outlines priorities for the incident commander during accidents involving these volatile chemicals. Training is also provided on what the factors are in the decision to be offensive or defensive in controlling a chemical accident. Other topics include selecting the proper protective equipment, protecting water supplies from spills, avoiding or containing runoff, using foams or spray fog nozzles to control vapors, using dry chemicals or carbon dioxide to extinguish fires, decontamination procedures and clean up.
