Who Needs Excavator Safety Training?
Anyone who will operate an excavator must receive excavator training. While OSHA doesn’t have specific guidelines for excavator certification, standard 1926.20(b)(4) states that only employees qualified by training or experience can operate equipment and machinery.
Additionally, 1926.21(b)(2) states that it is an employer’s duty to instruct employees in recognizing and avoiding unsafe conditions. In addition to classroom training, employers should facilitate hands-on training and observe employees on the machine and ensure they are taking all the proper safety precautions.
What Does Our Excavator Safety Training Cover?
Regardless of the machine model your company operates, this video and training program will teach the basic principles needed for safe operation on the job site. Preview the complete training video below to ensure it meets your needs.

While you don’t need a specific excavator license to operate the machinery, you do need proper training to operate the heavy equipment safely. Most employers also require you to have a standard drivers license and some may even require a commercial drivers license, which allows you to operate large machines and transport machinery to and from worksites.
Yes. Employers must make sure that all workers who operate heavy machinery and earthmoving equipment, including excavators, are trained and competent before starting work. This is outlined in standards like 29 CFR 1926.651 and OSHA Standard 1926.602
