Free DOT HazMat Training Videos

Watch these free DOT HazMat training videos to train your team, run a toolbox talk, or refresh employees on the four types of training the Department of Transportation requires. They’re professionally produced previews from our full DOT HazMat training programs — no sign-up needed to watch. Below the videos you can also download a free toolbox talk and a 10-question employee practice test.

DOT HazMat training isn’t one course — 49 CFR 172.704(a) requires general awareness/familiarization, function-specific and safety training, and security awareness training for every hazmat employee, plus in-depth security training for anyone with a role in a company security plan. The videos below are grouped by those four training types. A quick heads-up: a video alone isn’t compliance. The regulation requires training on the functions an employee actually performs, testing by appropriate means, and a training record your company keeps and can produce in an audit. These previews are the training refresher; the kits produce the quiz, certificates, and documentation.

DOT HazMat Training FAQs

Who needs DOT hazmat training?

Anyone who meets the definition of a “hazmat employee” in 49 CFR 171.8 — that includes people who load, unload, or handle hazardous materials; who manufacture, inspect, label, or test packaging used to transport it; who prepare it for transport; who are responsible for the safety of transporting it; and who drive a vehicle carrying it. It is not limited to drivers, and it is not based on job title — it is based on the function you actually perform.

How often is DOT hazmat training required?

Hazmat employees must be trained at least once every three years under 49 CFR 172.704(c)(2). A new or newly reassigned hazmat employee must be trained within 90 days, and until that training is complete they may only perform hazmat functions under the direct supervision of a properly trained hazmat employee. Training from a previous employer remains valid only if that employer shares the training record.

What training does DOT require for hazmat employees?

49 CFR 172.704(a) requires general awareness/familiarization training, function-specific training, safety training, and security awareness training. In-depth security training is additionally required for employees with a role in a company security plan, where a plan is required. Employers must also keep training records showing the employee’s name, the completion date, the materials used, the trainer’s name and address, and certification that the employee was trained and tested.

Is DOT hazmat training the same as a CDL hazmat endorsement?

No — they are two different things and people mix them up constantly. A CDL hazmat endorsement is a commercial driver’s licence credential a driver earns by passing a written state test and a TSA security threat assessment. DOT hazmat training under 49 CFR 172.704 is training your employer must give every hazmat employee — warehouse staff, packers, shippers, and drivers alike — and must document. Holding a hazmat endorsement does not satisfy your employer’s 172.704 training obligation, and this page is about the employee training, not the endorsement.

Can you get DOT hazmat training for free?

You can learn hazmat safety for free from videos like these, and they make a solid refresher or a way to see what the training covers. But free videos alone do not satisfy 49 CFR 172.704 — the regulation requires training on the specific functions an employee performs, testing by appropriate means, and a training record your company keeps and can produce. Use these free previews to train and refresh, then use the kits to run the training and produce the audit-ready records.
