Decontamination plays a significant role in any sort of HAZWOPER situation, and that’s why training on this subject is so necessary.  This HAZWOPER Decontamination Procedures training video will teach your staff all about work practices for decontamination, engineering controls, personal protective equipment, decontamination equipment, reduction zones, reduction corridors, and much more.  This training will give your personnel a broad understanding of HAZWOPER decontamination, the necessary procedures, and the tools to make it happen.

This HAZWOPER Decontamination Training Covers the Following Important Topics:

  • Working safely with hazardous materials requires four important components:
    1. Safe work practices (these are methods for separating hazmat workers from dangerous substances)
    2. Engineering controls (these are devices for protecting workers from hazardous materials)
    3. Proper hazardous material Personal Protective Equipment (anything that prevents the worker from contamination or physical injury, including hard hats, work boots, chemical protective clothing, face shields, etc.)
    4. and ultimately, Decontamination (removing hazardous substances from your PPE or other equipment)
  • Are decontamination procedures mandatory for sites where workers might be exposed to hazardous materials? (Yes, they are mandatory)
  • Are contaminated areas required to have restricted access under HAZWOPER? (Yes, areas such as Superfund sites or places where a chemical accident has occurred are required to be tightly restricted and controlled)
  • What is an exclusion zone under HAZWOPER? (These are areas that are deemed to be so dangerous that no one can enter without the proper authority and appropriate PPE. They are called “exclusion zones” because most people are not allowed to access them due to safety concerns)
  • What role does a site safety and health officer have in a decontamination procedure situation?

Other Important Concepts Covered in this HAZWOPER Decontamination Training:

  • What is a contamination reduction zone? (This is the part of a hazmat cleanup site that acts as a barrier between the exclusion zone and the world outside)
  • What is a contamination reduction corridor? (This is a one-way exit from the exclusion zone back to the outside world.  Everyone who enters an area deemed to be an exclusion zone must exit through the contamination reduction corridor, and there are no exceptions to this rule)
  • What type of activities occurs within a contamination reduction corridor? (Since this area is a last line of defense against hazardous material entering the “normal” outside world, this area serves an important role in any HAZWOPER cleanup.  There are a large number of decontamination stations where tools, clothing, PPE, and more are cleaned of their hazardous materials)
  • What is the importance of identifying contaminants before a decontamination chemical is used to clean tools, clothes, etc.?
  • What is an equipment drop in a HAZWOPER cleanup? (this is where any tools are placed that have been used in the cleanup area)
  • What is an “Outer Suit Wash” station inside a contamination reduction corridor? (This is where your chemical protective suit is sprayed with water and/or detergent to clean off any hazmat – this is followed by an outer suit rinse)
  • What role does a medical surveillance examination play for employees leaving their job site? (This is for employees who are coming out of the exclusion zone to ensure they haven’t been affected by any of the hazardous materials they have been cleaning up)
  • What to do if a HAZWOPER worker develops medical problems while on-site?
  • and much more…

Teaching your employees about the HAZWOPER decontamination process is critically important to your operation.  This training video will teach workers the ins and outs of the HAZWOPER decontamination process.  The training is 16 minutes long and comes in either an English or Spanish-speaking DVD or USB Stick.

All of our training videos include the following additional resources:

1) A Leader’s Guide

The person giving the training can use the Guide to help facilitate the training and provide additional verbal support to the video. It also includes a sample outline for the training session along with the highlights of the course.

2) An Employee Quiz

Important to be able to test your trainees to make sure they understand and comprehend the training course they just watched.  This is also good for employer documentation for safety training of employees.

3) Answer Key to the Quiz

Ensures the questions are being answered correctly.

4) An Attendance Sheet

Allows you to keep track of who was trained, when the training occurred, who was the instructor, etc. Excellent documentation to prove your training requirements are in order.

5) A Printable “Certificate of Completion”

Allows you to give one to each employee who attends the safety training session.  Can also be kept in an employee file for training documentation.
