Who needs bloodborne pathogens training?
Any employee with “occupational exposure” – reasonably anticipated contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials as part of their job. That includes healthcare, first responders, custodial and maintenance staff, tattoo/body-art workers, and designated workplace first-aid responders.
What are the main bloodborne pathogens?
Hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and HIV are the most important. Because you can’t tell whether blood is infectious by looking, “universal precautions” means treating all human blood and body fluids as if they are infectious.
What should I do right after a needlestick or blood exposure?
Wash the area (flush eyes or mucous membranes with water) and report it immediately. Your employer must provide a free, confidential medical evaluation and follow-up right away, including recommended post-exposure care.
