Do your employees need Safety Housekeeping Training? If so, then this training is for you. As you know, a big part of reducing on-the-job injuries is teaching workers to keep their work areas clean and free of debris. This is where good Safety Housekeeping Training can help your employees take care of their work areas, reduce hazards, and likely reduce injuries to themselves or co-workers. (We also offer a Construction-specific version of this video here if you are in a construction environment). For the general industry version, we offer the following course.

Topics Covered in this Safety Housekeeping Training:

  • How to develop a good “safety attitude” that keeps safety top of mind for employees
  • Provides information for viewers on how to cultivate good safety habits
  • How to handle the job demands while pacing yourself, recognizing when a break is needed, avoiding becoming reckless due to job demands, etc.
  • Why keeping your work area neat and clean prevents injuries
  • How does OSHA Housekeeping training reduce injuries? (by removing clutter, debris, excess materials, and more, the workplace becomes less of a hazard and can reduce slips, trips, falls, and other hazards)

Additional Safety Housekeeping Training Topics Discussed:

  • Why is keeping aisles and stairways free of equipment and other items important? (when cluttered, these areas become trip and fall hazards)
  • What are some examples of small items that might cause a hazard or cause an employee to injure themselves? (a pencil lying on the floor, paper on the ground, loose carpet pieces, sawdust, etc). These small items can be big hazards, so it’s important to keep the area clean and tidy.
  • Slippery areas that might contain water or other liquids should have signage or be cleaned often.
  • The importance of putting tools back in their storage location after they are used
  • Why should workers not stand on a chair if they need to elevate a few feet?

OSHA Housekeeping Training Discussion Points:

  • Why is proper storage of chemicals, tools, and supplies important?
  • What is the purpose of a Flammable Materials Cabinet, and why should it be used?
  • What to do in case of a chemical spill (Depending on the size of the spill, evacuate the area, refer to the Safety Data Sheet for information on how to clean up and dispose of the chemical, wear proper PPE while cleaning, and more)
  • How to dispose of a chemical that is no longer needed
  • The Housekeeping Training complements an employer’s OSHA housekeeping requirements found in Standard 1915.81
  • Examples of both “obvious’ as well as “hidden” hazards that good safety housekeeping practices can help alleviate
  • What is the role of gloves, safety glasses, and other PPE in a Safety Housekeeping protocol?
  • And, much more….

By providing your employees with OSHA Housekeeping Training, you are teaching them to keep their work areas clean. In the process, you will hopefully reduce exposure to accidents and injuries. Good housekeeping practices are a cornerstone of any safe workplace, and this training will help your employees get on board and put Safety Housekeeping into their daily workflow.

This course is available on a DVD or on a USB Stick and in either English or Spanish-language options. Runtime for this training is just over 16 minutes. We also offer this OSHA housekeeping course online as either a standalone option or as part of a larger online safety training library.

What are the 5S Housekeeping Standards?

The 5S housekeeping standards refer to a systematic framework aimed at organizing and managing workspaces to improve efficiency, safety, and cleanliness. Originating from Japan, the 5S methodology is widely applied in various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and education, to optimize processes and create a more productive work environment. The five S’s stand for:
1) Sort (Seiri): This step involves going through all tools, materials, etc., in the workspace and keeping only what is necessary. Unnecessary items are removed from the area, reducing clutter and freeing up space.
2) Set in Order (Seiton): Once the necessary items have been identified, the next step is to organize them so that they can be easily accessed and returned to their rightful place after use. This often involves labeling and using clear storage systems to ensure everything has a designated spot.
3) Shine (Seiso): This involves cleaning the workspace thoroughly to ensure it is free of dirt, grime, and other contaminants. Regular cleaning schedules are typically established to maintain this cleanliness over time.
4) Standardize (Seiketsu): The fourth step focuses on developing standard operating procedures for the first three steps. This includes creating consistent ways of executing tasks and processes to maintain orderliness, cleanliness, and organization over time
5) Sustain (Shitsuke): The final step involves creating a culture that adheres to the established procedures, ensuring that the practices of Sort, Set in Order, Shine, and Standardize are maintained over the long term. This often requires ongoing training, communication, and encouragement from all levels of an organization.

Is poor housekeeping an unsafe act in the eyes of OSHA?

Yes, poor housekeeping can be considered an unsafe act by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA sets and enforces safety standards to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for workers by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education, and assistance. Poor housekeeping can lead to a variety of hazards, such as slips, trips, falls, fire hazards, exposure to harmful substances, and other safety risks. As such, maintaining good housekeeping practices is a critical component of workplace safety and is required under various OSHA standards.
