You should always give your new employees Safety Orientation Training as part of your onboarding process.  Teaching new employees how to be aware of their surroundings, how to work safely in their new job, and to reduce their chances of getting injured is a benefit to both employees and employers alike.  OSHA regulations require employees to be trained on safety before starting work. This Safety Orientation Training Video will teach your new employees the ins and outs of workplace safety.

Concepts Covered in this Safety Orientation Training:

  • When we carelessly rush through our workday, employees can cause an accident to either themselves or to a co-worker, damage property, or even suffer a serious injury.  Safely doing the job is always the best way.
  • New hire safety training helps reinforce the concept of safety first within your company.
  • Employees should always take precautions and keep safety top of mind while performing their jobs. We must always protect ourselves from hazards, be aware of our surroundings, prevent accidents and injuries, and prepare for emergencies. Newly hired employees, in particular, need this concept taught to them. Safety awareness is a skill all employees should learn – both new employees and tenured employees alike.
  • What are some ways that employees can mentally prepare to accomplish their jobs in a safe manner? (concentrate on the task at hand and give the task your full attention)
  • The importance of doing your job without drugs or alcohol (these have no place in a workplace)
  • How to spot hazards in the workplace and what to do when you find one (safety awareness)
  • What safety rules should be in place in any workplace?
  • How to reduce or remove hazardous items or situations while performing your job (an important part of any safety orientation program and an important concept for new employees to learn on their first day or as soon as possible)

Safety Orientation Training – Additional Topics Taught in This Program:

  • The importance of keeping your work area clean and free from debris (also known as safety housekeeping)
  • The role of personal protective equipment or PPE in a safe workplace (some job duties might require gloves, eye protection, safety glasses, or special shoes).  PPE training is a critical component of any safety training program.
  • Understanding how the human body works when we lift, push, and pull and how to reduce possible injuries by lifting properly, using good ergonomics, etc. Safety training should always include body mechanics and their role in helping to keep employees accountable and injury-free while working.
  • Understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and what to do in the case of a chemical spill (of course, your own company policies should be discussed with the new employee as well)
  • Workplace fire prevention and fire extinguisher use (fire extinguishers are something all employees should have a basic understanding of, when they are used, and how they are used)
  • and much more

Giving your employees a Safety Orientation before they start work is an important first step in keeping them safe and your workplace accident and injury-free.  Used in addition to your own company safety program, this Safety Orientation Video will help train your employees and give them the overview they need to get started on the job.  Available as an English or Spanish-speaking DVD or USB Stick.
